Walking the Labyrinth is akin to the movement of a Woman’s Inner Moon, her cycle of creativity and reproduction.

Movement from the outer opening into the center of the labyrinth represents the ovulation phase of a woman’s cycle. As estrogen circulates throughout her body, her inner moon waxes, filling her with creative energy as she brings forth her life-giving eggs that peak at mid-cycle of her full moon. This is her time to dance in the outer world, to be creative, active and able to manifest her dreams. Her shedding eggs journey down the lunar horns of her fallopian tubes. Ovulation is the journey inward to the center of the labyrinth. It is the first phase of the labyrinth walk. The journey toward the center of the labyrinth is the time when we pose a question to our intuitive voice.

When she reaches the center of her serpentine journey, she will find illumination, a moment of clarity and the conception of new insights to be birthed with the release of her moon flow. As the waxing into her full moon progresses, progesterone is released, building up the uterine lining at this phase of her moon cycle. At the center of the labyrinth attention turns inward. She must take a moment to reach into her essence and unveil her deeper truth. She allows her inner knowing, her intuition, to guide her as her dark moon flows. She floats and dreams within this inner pool of feminine essence. At its center, the labyrinth reveals the message of the inner voice.

The return pathway is a walk of integration, a journey where the treasure is unveiled and understood. The cycle completes and begins anew. Her void has been cleared and a space for new ideas can be birthed, new concepts can grow and fresh dreams can be implanted in the dark only to rise and smile at the reflection of the moon’s return to the light. The Oracle becomes the Awakened One as she returns from the labyrinth’s spiraling inner core. She is the bringer of the dawn of new wisdom. The walk out of the labyrinth reveals the insights and understanding of the message of the inner voice.

This description of the how the labyrinth walk is similar to a woman's reproductive cycle has its origin in a transformative passage Jesse experiences in my book, Landings, The Spiritual Return to Living Fully in the Body.

As I have worked more deeply with the guidance of my inner voice, I have found the labyrinth to be a particularly helpful process and tool for accessing my inner guidance. I keep a finger labyrinth at my desk and when I am stumped, confused, unfocused or in need of answers, I pose a question to the labyrinth and then take the journey. What follows below is the process I use for inspiration and intuitive guidance. Try it out and see what you discover! 1. Place your left index finger at the opening of the labyrinth’s path. Follow your breath for a few minutes and center yourself, bringing your consciousness down into your bodymind.
2. Pose a question. This question can pertain to any area of your life. As you pose the question, hold it in your mind as you move into the labyrinth and trace its path to the center with your fingertip.
3. Come to the center and wait. Meditate for a few minutes or until some form of an answer comes. This illumination may not appear at first to be an answer. It may be a vision or a symbol that at first blush may not appear to have any meaning as a response to your question. Just hold the thought or vision in your womb space and allow it to be.
4. Retrace your pathway out of the labyrinth allowing the question and response to integrate within you.

Our circle of intuition creates an opportunity for inquiry and revelation that can be accessed between the mind of the brain and the mind of the body. We can travel the ladder of light, or the chakra system of the body, when we embark on this kind of spiraling journey. Our intuitive voice enlightens us as we take the knowledge gained from the brain's mind and move it down into the body's mind. In this movement of energy and intelligence, we are able to access the wisdom stored within the chakra system of the body.

Let’s practice this mystical movement now with the Finger Labyrinth. We will follow the same exercise as previously given but this time, imagine you are traveling the ladder of light (chakra system) within the labyrinth, from your brain's mind to your bodymind, (located at the center of your body near your navel).

You will begin at the brain, represented by the outer opening of the path and you will travel inward to the body mind at the center of the labyrinth. There will be natural resting-places on the spiraling path where you encounter each of your chakras. Allow your fingertip to sense and determine where these chakras exist on your spiraling journey.

Place your left index finger at the opening of the labyrinth’s path. Follow your breath for a few minutes and center yourself. When you feel ready, pose a question. This question can pertain to any area of your life. As you pose the question, hold it in your mind and move into the labyrinth, tracing its circular path to the center.

Begin at the crown chakra at the top of your head, which is represented at the opening of the labyrinth. This energy center is home to the aspect of you that is the old soul within, who knows and sees all of your inner truth as it merges with the vastness of your spirit. Ask this energy center to awaken and be with you on your labyrinthine journey to the center of your bodymind.

Now move your finger along the path and allow it to rest when your fingertip senses the place of your third eye chakra on the labyrinth. This energy center is home to the aspect of you that is insightful and open to the cosmic all-seeing-eye of your inner truth. Ask this energy center to awaken and be with you on your labyrinthine journey to the center of your bodymind.

Now move your finger along the path and allow it to rest at the place on the path that represents your throat chakra. This energy center is home to the aspect of you that speaks with the sweetness of your inner truth as it reflects the greater truth of the Divine. Ask this energy center to awaken and be with you on your labyrinthine journey to the center of your bodymind.

Now move your finger along the path and allow it to rest at the place on the path that represents your heart chakra. This energy center is home to the aspect of you that is loving and willing to open your heart to the intelligence of love which is the eternal source of your inner truth. Ask this energy center to awaken and be with you on your labyrinthine journey to the center of your bodymind.

Now move your finger along the path and allow it to rest at the place on the path that represents your solar plexus chakra. This energy center is home to the aspect of you that is curious about your intuition and willing to explore your inner truth. Ask this energy center to awaken and be with you on your labyrinthine journey to the center of your bodymind.

Now move your finger along the path and allow it to rest at the place on the path that represents your sexual chakra. This energy center is home to the aspect of you that is playful, creative, and open to the imagination, the gateway leading to your inner truth. Ask this energy center to awaken and be with you on your labyrinthine journey to the center of your bodymind.

Now move your finger along the path and allow it to rest at the place on the path that represents your root chakra. This energy center is home to the aspect of you that is innocent and one with the beauty of nature. Ask this energy center to awaken and be with you on your labyrinthine journey to the center of your bodymind.

Come to the center of your labyrinth and drop your consciousness down into your bodymind. Feel your center of awareness and be still. Meditate and wait for a vision, sensation, message, or a feeling to come to you, slowly and gently with great ease. Stay with this until some form of an answer comes. This illumination may not appear at first to be an answer. It may be a vision or a symbol that initially may not have any meaning for you as a response to your question. Just hold the thought or vision in your womb space and allow it to be.

When you feel you have received the message, retrace your pathway out of the labyrinth allowing the question and response to integrate within you. Again, stop when your fingertip senses the presence of each chakra and anchor the energy in each of these centers, allowing the message to deepen along the ladder of light with each center of wisdom offering its contribution to the meaning of the message you have received.

Once you have reached the outer opening of the labyrinth, imagine you have arrived at the height of your crown chakra and visualize a golden lotus blossom unfolding at this energy center. It is unfolding with the beauty of your inner wisdom.
